In part I, we introduced the concept of social networking sites and how to begin online networking. In part II, we detail some more specific networking and marketing techniques.

Keep it Real

Just as with every new communication technology, there are those who use the medium in overbearing, unwanted ways. Social networking sites are no different. The key term here is “networking,” give and take. According to Bob Baker, author of MySpace Music Marketing, social networking success stories have one thing in common: “They’re all about the ping-pong effect ? It’s you sharing yourself with and getting to know dozens, and then perhaps hundreds of people. In turn, those people mention you to their friends.”

It’s NOT about posting, sending and otherwise spamming hundreds or thousands of others. Because interaction is a key feature of these sites, the potential for backlash is enormous. Social networking sites are back-and-forth communication forums, not broadcast media. Annoy or abuse people and they’ll tell the world.

So what can you do on these sites? How exactly does one share his/herself and get to know people?

Basic Online Marketing Principles

There are certain basic online marketing principles that apply when networking online. Among them:

- First and foremost, no spam. Communication should be individual and meaningful, not bulk, impersonal nonsense.

- On a related note, do not use automated software to post generic comments or messages in bulk.

- When emailing or messaging, unobtrusively remind people of what you do through your signature. Include your name; clickable Website URL; tagline or short mission statement; and/or other contact information in the signature.

Finding Connections

—– Sidebar on Terminology. Those you connect with are termed differently across different social networking sites. “Friends,” “connections,” your “network” and “subscribers” all describe online associates. Here, I use “network” and “connections.” —–

A critical component of successful networking (both in the physical and cyber worlds) is finding quality connections. On social networking sites, first think about the types of people you want to connect with (see “Whom to Interact With” in part I). Then use a variety of methods to find them:

- Use the site’s search features to find connections by their psychographic or demographic features (religion, age, gender, geographic location, interests, likes/dislikes, etc.)

- Each time you find a new connection, look for additional connections in her or his network.

- Study comments on your connections’ pages ? or those outside your network with similar interests ? for potential new connections.

Approaching People to Become a Part of your Online Network

After finding potential connections, approach them about becoming part of your network. Ways to do this include:

- Send a friend request to each.

- Post thoughtful, relevant comments on their pages (which also creates new links to your page).

- Return comments on your page with relevant ones on the commenter’s’ page.

- When contacting someone, send a private message and leave a comment on her or his page.

Working your Network

The flip side of finding potential connections is having potential connections find you. There are several things you can do to become more approachable:

- Your page is the first thing people see when researching you, so keep it appealing. Regularly review comments others have left and delete irrelevant or crude remarks.

- Add new content to your page often, giving people a reason to visit regularly.

- Set aside time to respond to comments and messages.

Like all worthwhile business relationships, online networks must be nurtured. Make the effort to do so, and over time you will reap the rewards.

To Cloak or Not to Cloak

(No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

In the field of search engine optimization, cloaking has come under fire regarding whether or not it is a legitimate, ethical, online marketing strategy.

Cloaking is a search engine optimization strategy in which a web page is created for each of the major search engines for top positioning, and only the search engine spiders see the optimized pages. The optimized web pages are never seen by end users. The end users view a different page, hence the term “cloaking.”

How Cloaking Works

Cloaking is a program (installed on your web server) that detects visitors to your web site. The cloaking system works by detecting search engine spiders via spider name or IP address. By comparing the IP address of the site visitor to a database of IP addresses of search engine spiders, the cloaking program determines whether or not a visitor is a search engine spider. The server will send a display page to all other machines requesting that URL bearing a generic IP.

Thus, if the program detects the AltaVista spider, the spider is sent a web page optimized for AltaVista. If the program detects the Inktomi spider, the program sends a web page that is optimized for Inktomi. If the program does not detect a search engine spider, then a web site’s viewable page is displayed.

The IP numbering system is an addressing protocol vital for connection and delivery of data across the Internet and cannot be legally falsified. Lists of spider IP numbers are widely available, and new spider IP numbers can be spotted reasonably easily and quickly.

Cloaked web pages can be well suited for the top search engine positions because these pages do not have to be visually appealing. They would be simple in design and contain nothing but keyword-filled content because a real person (an end user) will never see this page.

Pros

One of the advantages of cloaking is that you can tailor web pages for each individual search engine spider and score top positions in multiple search engines. It is very difficult for a single page to do well in all of the search engines because each search engine uses a different algorithm to rank web pages.

Another advantage of cloaking is that a site will not be limited to a search-engine-friendly design and layout. There are many web sites that have good content and design that the search engines have a difficult time indexing. The cloaked pages will allow for optimal search engine indexing. The visually appealing web pages are purely for end users.

The main reason people use cloaking is to hide HTML code from prying eyes. When you achieve top search engine positions, your top-ranked web pages will probably be analyzed by your competitors. Cloaking these web pages will keep important optimization strategies (keyword frequency, keyword placement, word count, etc.) from your competitors.

Cons

Though cloaking can keep your competitors from some of your search engine optimization strategies, it can also be used to hide other things. People can steal your site’s content (HTML tags and text) and hide it behind a stealth script. Other spam techniques, such as redirected pages, can also be hidden from end users.

Writing effective meta-tags and having optimal keyword placement are both good search engine strategies, but meta-tags and keyword placement are not the only elements of search engine algorithms. For example, all of the major search engines measure popularity (link popularity and/or click-through popularity) in some manner. If cloaked pages are never visited by end users, then the cloaked pages cannot attain good popularity.

The major downside to cloaking may have you thinking twice about using it. The search services do not approve of cloaking. In a recent post to I-Search Discussion List, Marshall Simmonds, Manager of Search Engine Relations at About.com, posted the recent conversations he had with representatives from AltaVista, Inktomi, and Northern Light. The sentiments expressed were simple and to the point: Web sites that cloak will be permanently banned from their search engine databases. Sounds like deterrent language to us.

Also, many people have reported to I-Search that they do better with positioning if they simply optimize normally and use techniques that are not possible with cloaked pages.

Top 10 Tips for Using Web 2.0 to Promote Your Business

(No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

We hear a lot about Web 2.0 these days. It sounds neat and it’s trendy to talk about blogging and social media. But does it really affect our businesses? Is Web 2.0 just for kids and tech-hipsters or is it something we business owners should use to help promote our businesses?

I can’t tell you if Web 2.0 is right for your business but I can tell you it’s something to be aware of. Ignoring it means ignoring a possible tool that could be valuable in helping you get more customers.

So, to help you get started in thinking about Web 2.0 for your business, here are some things for you to consider.

1. Have a plan.

Don’t dive in just because it’s cool or because you read an article about it. Be clear about what you’re trying to accomplish, how much you’re willing to invest and what time frame you are working on. Like any aspect of your business - plan ahead.

2. Make sure your target audience is online.

Web 2.0 tools are fun but useless if the people who see your stuff don’t want what you offer. Or if they don’t look to the Web for information to help them buy what you sell, then your efforts will be less effective. Like any marketing channel, it only works if your prospective customers are there to see (or hear) your message and they are receptive to it.

3. Create good content.

Web 2.0 is the social web but it’s still content-driven. Lousy content leads to lousy marketing, no matter how flashy it is. Make your content relevant, interesting and real. Put yourself in your customer’s shoes and answer their questions with your content.

4. Don’t sell.

Help, inform, educate but do not sell. Web 2.0 is all about people connecting by helping each other. No salesman allowed! Think education, not advertising. Deliver useful, nuts and bolts stuff or honest opinions they can believe. That’s how you build credibility and trust that lead to new customer relationships.

5. Start with a free hosted blog.

WordPress.Com and Blogger.Com both have very useful and simple blogs you can setup for free. Use them to start blogging and get a feel for how it works and how people use Web 2.0. Dip your toe in the water before diving in.

6. Talk to kids

Chat with some kids (ages 8 to 18) and find out how they use the web. They are the trend-setters. What they’re doing now, the rest of us will be doing soon. Learn what they do and why. This helps you understand the web from a different perspective.

7. Do it yourself.

Web 2.0 is about being real. It’s real people connecting with each other. It’s okay to hire a pro to advise you. But to keep it genuine, make sure you or your employees create the content and do the work. Otherwise people will know you’re faking it.

8. Buy a camcorder and start shooting

Go to Best Buy or Radio Shack and buy an inexpensive camcorder, tripod and lapel microphone. Buy 20-30 tapes too. Then take a weekend and shoot film. Practice, practice, practice. Get comfortable being on camera so you’re not nervous or dorky. Then, write a funny or useful how-to sketch and film it. Use Microsoft MovieMaker to edit and then upload to YouTube.com.

9. Buy an inexpensive audio recorder

MusicBarn.com has a package that includes M-Audio’s MobilePre USB recording interface. Add a microphone and you have a high quality setup to record podcasts and MP3 audio files whenever you want. Then buy NGWave sound editing software to make it sound professional and you’re in business.

10. Surf ’till it Hurts

Surf blogs, YouTube, Google Videos, Del.icio.us, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Technorati and other social media websites. Get a feel for how they work and who goes there. Become part of some social media communities. Make new friends online. Immerse yourself in the Web 2.0 culture so you know how it works and if it might fit your marketing plans.

Online Marketing Through Social Networking (Part I)

(No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

Social networking online is one of today’s hottest trends. Many, however, wonder how social networking can help their careers or businesses and exactly how to get started with this online marketing technique. Here in part 1, we will help you get started. Next, in part 2, we will explain some techniques for expanding your presence and building a quality network of online contacts.

What is Online Social Networking?

From a conceptual standpoint, online social networking is no different than traditional networking and socializing. You meet people and get to know them by sharing information about each other. Those you like and/or share interests with become part of your “network.” The marketing magic kicks in when those in your network start talking about you. Your reputation spreads by word-of-mouth.

The Internet and related technology have taken networking to the next level, expanding each individual’s reach and exposure through online marketing. Where traditionally people gather in person to network ? at the same time and place as others ? members of online networking groups are not limited by time or geography. Each group member can interact 24/7 from any location worldwide. Consequently, online networking techniques are very different from in-person networking.

How To Interact Through Social Networking

Ways to interact are numerous. The first order of business is to decide what your marketing goals are with respect to social networking. While “finding new friends” is a sufficient personal reason for social networking, business marketing goals need to be more specific. Are you an individual looking for a job or freelance work? Do you want to gain exposure for your product, brand or company? Are you looking for potential employees or contractors? Do you want to get prospects interested enough to visit your Website or contact you? Your goals will dictate what you put on your profile and social networking home page, as well as who you look for to become part of your network.

After you’ve decided on your purpose for online networking, choose which social networking Website(s) you will participate in.

Where to Network Online

You can find a comprehensive list of social networking sites here, at Wikipedia. I am familiar with those listed below. They will give you an idea of the range of opportunities you will find at social networking Websites:

Yahoo! 360 (360.yahoo.com): Yahoo!’s social networking site is in beta as of this writing. The unique feature here is your Yahoo! 360 space is cross-promoted with other Yahoo! products, such as with your reviews on Yahoo! Local and your Yahoo! Groups. Like many social networking sites, you can also host a blog on the server.

MySpace (myspace.com): This is the mother of social networking sites. Originally dominated by teens, there are reports of the “graying of myspace” as older people and businesses are also networking on the site. It may be worth your while to spend some time there to see if your target customers hang out there.

LinkedIn (linkedin.com): LinkedIn is excellent for professional, career-related online marketing because it focuses exclusively on business and professional networking. You will find interfaces to connect with classmates or colleagues (both past and present); find service providers or clients; post or find a job; and ask or answer business-related questions.

Gather (gather.com): This network incorporates user publications (in the form of articles) and a points reward system into the usual social networking activities.

Each social networking Website has it’s own “personality” and a different mix of people to interact with. Before signing up, go to each site and explore a bit ? search on keywords related to your goals and interests, check out the different groups, the activity level, etc. This will help you determine if a site will be beneficial to you. Once you find a site that interests you, establish your presence by signing up and filling in the questions for your profile and site home page. Once that is done, you are ready to interact.

Whom To Interact With

The people you want to associate with (i.e. make “friends” or be “connected” to) will depend largely on your goals. There are several types of people you will want to consider contacting. Each can help you in different ways, so consider looking for more than one type of “target friend:”

Customers and Consumers: People who will benefit from what you do, consume or buy your products or services, and rave about you to their friends.

Others Within Your Industry: People with whom you can network, share resources and cross-promote with.

Media and Publishers: People who work for, or can influence, publications you would like to be mentioned in (e-zines, newspapers, Websites, etc).

Consultants: People who may want to hire or purchase products from you.

Event, Company or Organization representatives: People who operate businesses and associations that support your industry.

How To Find Friends

A few people will find you based on your profile, but you will want to actively seek out quality friends. You can start to find friends by joining groups related to your expertise, that have members who match your target friend profile or interest you in general. You can also approach individuals and ask them to become a friend and/or part of your network.

In part 2 we will detail some more specific networking and marketing techniques. Until then, explore your social networking sites, get comfortable with the features and find a few friends.

Search Engine Optimization for Everyone

(No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires federal agencies to ensure that all electronic and information technology used is accessible for people with disabilities. This includes Web sites. Though the public sector has no such requirement, a site designed for accessibility will broaden your audience and improve your market share, because accessibility is not only beneficial to disabled users but also to the growing number of users with electronic devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) devices.

The more accessible your Web site, the wider your potential audience. Think about it: Can you afford to lose the 28.2 million potential prospects who are color blind (predominantly men) because you haven’t considered the effect of color on their ability to use your site? Can you afford to inconvenience people who access the Web from different browsers, diverse environments, various devices or platforms, or low connection speeds? An accessible site is user friendly because of emphasis on content, structure, and ease of navigation — a big plus for users. Few things annoy Internet users more than not being able to accomplish their objectives effortlessly when visiting Web sites — be it the ability to find information or the ease of processing that information. Reaching a wider audience and accommodating customer needs are good reasons to consider accessibility.

Enhance Accessibility and Improve Usability

Search engine optimization (SEO) of your site for search engines enhances accessibility and improves usability, but benefits go further than that. It’s smart to ensure that your site is viewable and navigable from a wide variety of Web clients and for people accessing the Web from a variety of different environments. Here’s why:

  • One out of every 12 men are color blind, thus your choice of colors affects their ability to use your site.
  • Baby boomers surf the Web in large numbers. This demographic is the fastest growing group of new Internet users. These people find it hard to read the small fixed fonts frequently used by designers. They also are users of cell phones and PDAs.
  • Not everyone has a mouse and keyboard — or the ability to use these tools. Increasingly, more people are using speech browsers while accessing the Internet in their cars. Others have difficulty using a mouse due to carpal tunnel syndrome or because of visual impairment.
  • Not everyone can view graphics. Beyond the needs of visually impaired users, many people access the Web with slow connections, disabling graphics and scripting capabilities. Some may use a text-only screen or a small PDA screen. Some people still use older browsers and computers.
  • Environments can influence accessibility. Some people work where lighting makes it difficult to read the screen. Others may be in situations where eyes, ears, or hands are occupied, interfering with certain tasks (e.g., people driving or working in a loud environment).
  • The popularity of mobile devices is an accessibility challenge as more and more people use wireless devices to access the Web.

Add it up. Inaccessibility takes a toll in lost opportunities for prospects and sales. It’s important to plan ahead, taking the time to identify your site goals, intended audience, content, design, and SEO services. This will save money in the long run and makes the updating and maintenance of your site easier.

If your site is already up, have it audited (Bobby is a free service to help identify and repair accessibility barriers), then prioritize improvements by level of impact to meet the basic accessibility standards.

SEO Content Optimization and Accessibility

Content optimization and accessibility are complementary processes. When optimizing a site for search engines, a good SEO provider will analyze the site’s code, structure, and page layout, looking for any elements that might prevent a robot from indexing the site. Content optimization resulting in search engine friendliness also helps accessibility.

For example, a Flash site can benefit from creating a static mini-site of a few pages with good text, providing links to the Flash site on each page. The mini-site is accessed as a static page from the main site. It may not be as visually engaging, but the text is readable without Flash. Compensating for “bells and whistles” makes the site crawlable by search engine robots and gives users who can’t view Flash the ability to access a low-bandwidth alternative.

Accessibility Guidelines

The W3 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines’ Table of Contents tells you how to make your site accessible. Each issue is described in detail, and examples are provided. The guideline headings are:

  1. Provide equivalent alternatives for auditory and visual content.
  2. Do not rely on color alone.
  3. Use proper markup and style sheets and do so properly.
  4. Clarify natural language usage.
  5. Create tables that transform gracefully.
  6. Ensure that pages featuring new technologies transform gracefully.
  7. Ensure user control of time-sensitive content changes.
  8. Ensure direct accessibility of embedded user interfaces.
  9. Design for device-independence.
  10. Use interim solutions.
  11. Use W3C technologies and guidelines.
  12. Provide context and orientation information.
  13. Provide clear navigation mechanisms.
  14. Ensure that documents are clear and simple.

It’s advantageous to make your site accessible to broaden your audience. Enhancing accessibility with SEO services makes sense because good positioning helps improve market share and branding.

Yes, it can be easy, and it is definitely creative and fun, but it is a business, like any other, and you need to be qualified for the position and have a good handle on what you’re doing in order to survive.

There are many affiliate marketers out there who simply aren’t making the grade, and the reason is that they don’t have the proper training to be successful at their jobs. Anyone who is absolutely serious about being a success has three options: training, training, and more training!

But where to begin? Well, there are several ways to receive this kind of training. First of all, trial and error may be one way to go, as many affiliate marketers are self taught.

That is a time consuming affair though, with no guarantee of success. A better way to go would be through the use of affiliate marketing manuals, online tutorials, affiliate marketing training courses, and of course, the great affiliate conferences held every year in different parts of the world.

Read a Book!

One of the best and easiest ways to retain the basic fundamental principles of affiliate marketing is to go down to your bookstore and grab up a couple books on the subject. Many affiliate marketers have found a way to subsidize their income as instructors and novelists, since they are spending a lot of time writing articles for their websites anyway.

There is little in the way of professional training in affiliate marketing, for example, you can’t go to university to become an expert on it, but many of these authors have run the self-taught method explained above and achieved a certain level of success.

Learn from their successes and mistakes! Read their books and take notes. See how they have found success in some areas and how they relate to the other books you have. Cross referencing is a great way to get a feel for the fundamentals of affiliate marketing, as you will start to see specific patterns emerge in the training methods of each book.

Also, you will be able to trim away the extra fat that may be part of each authors affiliate style, and come up with your own goals and direction based on the knowledge they have imparted to you.

If reading a book isn’t getting you anywhere or you’d like to see more, there is always the online tutorial route for affiliate marketing training.

Getting Extra Help through Cyberspace

Another great way to get he affiliate marketing training you need is to go through an online tutorial. In much the same way as a book will help you learn the basics and get the information you really need, online tutorials can show you how real affiliate marketing can be successful in a dynamic web presence complete with working models and examples.

In addition, many of these tutorials will offer links to great savings and deals on important affiliate products such as web site hosting, template design, and domain name registration to get the eager affiliate marketing student up and running.

Many of these affiliate marketing online tutorials are designed and kept up by successful affiliate marketers (some of whom may have written books that you should already be reading!) and you can learn from their mistakes and successes. Also, since web copy is generally simpler than book formats, expect the information you gather from an online tutorial to be brisk, to the point, and perfect for taking notes.

Back to School, Affiliate Marketing Style!

If you feel that you haven’t learned enough from reading books and checking out online tutorials, then you are in exactly the right frame of mind for being an affiliate marketing success. It is time to move on to where real success begins: the classroom.

Now, this classroom can be in a real class, as some successful affiliate marketers hold actual marketing lessons for their students, and, depending where you live, this may or may not be an option for you.

On the other hand, there are plenty of marketers out there who offer their affiliate marketing training courses as downloadable e-courses, something you can do at home in your spare time just like distance learning for many universities!

Finally, after all of the hard work and effort you have put into your education, and you feel you can’t possibly learn any more without going into the world of affiliate marketing yourself, it’s time to relax, have some fun, and really get down to business: it’s time to attend and affiliate marketing event.

Affiliate summits and conferences are places for industry professionals to get together, share a few laughs, eat, drink, and introduce themselves to other parts of the affiliate marketing industry.

This means that web designers, hosting companies, and businesses looking to expand their affiliate marketing presence are all mingling with affiliate marketers themselves, shaking hands and making friendships that will be beneficial to all involved.

Affiliate marketers can also learn about changes to laws and policies, new technologies, and better strategies for tackling affiliate marketing problems. They will be exposed to the same people who they will be in contact with when they start their affiliate marketing strategies, and this in turn can improve their relationships and business prospects across the board.

Plus, it is a chance to become a member of an exciting and dynamic close-knit group of people who have come together and formed an environment of support in an industry that leaves many untrained victims by the wayside. These are people that you want to get to know, not because it will help your business but because their friendships will enrich your life in ways you can’t begin to imagine.

Affiliate marketing training. If you are really serious about getting into the race, take some time and learn to crawl first.

To create your successful online income-creating business, you need to set up a system that will help you create and sell your own products in the long run. To begin, as you build your business with your online products to sell, you will search for established affiliate products to plug into your advertising and distribution system. When you have created your own products, you will slowly replace the affiliate items with your very own.

How can you achieve that? These are listed in the following steps:

1. Self evaluation. What are you looking for in life? Will internet business meet these criteria? You need to examine and evaluate these to ensure that this is really something you are looking for.

2. Perseverance. Then will you see success. There are highs and lows in all that we do, so there is no point in spending your time and money on something that you will call it quit the moment things get rough. This happens, so you must persevere or you might as well not get started.

3. Your interest and the market. Decide what you enjoy and would like to market and provide, that also has a reasonable market. For instance, if you like gardening, are there enough people out there online who share the same hobby as you, that you can meet some of their needs and generate profit at the same time?

4. Learn where you niche market congregates. How do they use the internet? How do they relate to others online, is it through forums, blogs, etc.

5. Know the needs of your chosen market. What do they need? What kind of questions do they ask that you might be able to answer?

6. Communicate with your chosen market. You must discover the needs and then learn how to meet those needs. Research and find out how you can become an expert in your chosen market.

7. Find out what is available on the web that already meet some of the needs. Obviously, the next step is to then find out what are the products your market is asking about that are not available yet. This is where you can begin to think about creating.

8. However, do not ignore those products that are already available on the web. You can also earn some income if there is affiliate programs associated with them. At the same time, you can develop your own product.

9. Build your own web site. You cannot maintain an online long term business by relying on someone else’s web site, because it is really their business, they are just paying you to promote it. Create a squeeze page on your web site so you can begin to enroll visitors to your web site in an email campaign. It is important to use email to keep in touch with the people you meet online, who might have an interest in either your new product or one of the affiliate products. You should also create a recommendations page which will have links to your affiliate products.

10. Get an auto responder. Next, write a series of articles relating to your chosen market. At the end of each email article, place a link back to the recommendations page of your web site.

11. Start spending more time online with your chosen market. Join every forum you can where people in your market get together. This is the place to find out what they are looking for, and what their questions are.

12. Find out the answers to the questions people asked in the forums. Provide your answers and in no time, people will start to look upon you as an expert!

13. Consolidate your answers to all the questions that people in forums have been asking, in an information product or FAQ (frequently Asked Questions) page.

14. What else do you need but a sales page that specifically markets your new product!

15. Create a series of emails that will introduce people to your new product.

16. Find joint venture partners that will help you distribute your new product.

17. Start advertising in ezines, and other marketers’ email lists.

18. Now, you can sit back and start collecting the profits.

19. You will repeat the process from step (1) and create another product. Meanwhile, continue to promote your product, as well as some related affiliate products, to your mailing list. Maintain and keep your relationship growing with those on your mailing list.
