Only two weeks after revealing plans to award a $900m GSM network expansion contract to Nokia Siemens Networks, Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel has confirmed it is to sign a $2bn contract extension with Ericsson.
The contract represents Ericsson’s biggest single contract award to date, and will see it expand the operator’s GSM/EDGE network into rural areas and provide capacity management over the next two years.
Specifically, Ericsson will design, plan, deploy, optimize, and manage Bharti Airtel’s GSM network across 15 regional “circles” in India as well as its pan-India pre-paid platform across 23 circles. Ericsson claims to manage about 70% of Bharti’s GSM/EDGE network in India.
